Artist Statement
Being a Studio Art Major and art educator means that my art work comes in several mediums. Printmaking is the route in which I normally produce my personal work. It is bold yet experimental and message oriented with a bit of suggestive themes that require the viewer to fill in their own blanks. Some of those themes can indulge the viewers in conversations over politics, justice, and current events. The end product is left for the viewer to accept it in their own way, allowing the art to take many different forms depending on who's viewing it. The emphasis is on the idea that everyone has their own mindset and background, therefore perceives art on a personal level. Any message in my work is left for the viewer to use to their own discretion.
The main focus of my work trickles down to my philosophy for educating students. The idea is to create something out of nothing, and let it mean everything! Both students and myself as a collaboration of artists bring awareness to current events that revolve around their lives and that’s what hooks the viewers. I believe the importance of sustaining proactive imagination is key for growing kids in order to stay successfully creative. It’s important to stay creative in order to be ready for real life challenges. My goal as artist in a classroom is to enable students to tap into their creativity and make hand-worked art out of found objects and limited materials at hand. Painting, drawing, sculpting, and of course printmaking all play a major role throughout the school year in the classroom. This process guides them to think critically all while allowing themselves to express an idea, feeling or message. Engaging in art not only allows students to be expressive, but also gives opportunities for them to work through obstacles, set/reach goals, and gain confidence in their creativity… ultimately letting the impact of myself as a working artist transcend through their artistic journey.
